Eleventh Doctor “Scales” Waistcoat – Costume Analysis

Preliminary Notes

Welcome to the OCD costume analysis of the 11th Doctor’s “scales” waistcoat!

I primarily researched and analyzed this costume for the Tailors Gone Wild (formerly Bad Wolf Costumes) 11th Doctor “scales” waistcoat sewing pattern, which, as you’ll see, I drafted to be as faithful to the originals as possible.

However, I’m happy to share my research and findings with you, in the form of this free analysis.

Acknowledgments

I want to thank costume designer Howard Burden for designing such a wonderful costume for Matt Smith to wear toward the end of his run playing the 11th Doctor. It’s probably my favorite of the myriad of costumes worn by Smith over the course of his era.

I’d like to thank Alex Murphy (aka “The Ginger Doctor“) and Daniel Pawlik for their input during my costume research – and for tracking down the original “scales” waistcoat fabric and making it available to the Doctor Who costuming community!

I’d also like to thank Christopher Sos, Alexey Korobko, and Var Thelin for sharing their photos of the screen-used “scales” waistcoat (formerly) on display at the Doctor Who Experience.

And finally, I want to especially thank my Ko-Fi supporters for helping me be able to produce sewing/costuming resources like this analysis, and share them online.

If you enjoy this costume analysis, please support my costume research on Ko-Fi. 🙂
